The Boston Celtics is an American professional basketball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The team participates in the American Professional Basketball League as the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference.
In 1946, the Celtics and the Basketball Association of America (BAA) were formed together. By the fall of 1949, BAA and NBL merged, and the Celtics became one of the NBA teams. In 1950, the Celtics became the first team to sign a black African-American player Chuck Cooper through the draft.
